NB. The following site descriptions are based on the Warden’s knowledge of the site. They are no substitute for the recommended, personal pre-visit to the site. Please note that the site is not permanently manned. To avoid a wasted journey, please make arrangements through the Booking Secretary or the Warden.
PURBECK FIELD
Furze A & B (0.33 ha/0.82ac & 0.29 ha/0.72 ac) - 2 adjoining sites by entrance gate. Could be combined for a larger site. Screened and sheltered to west by established hedge. Recently brought into use and still a little uneven in places. Each suitable for large Troop camps of approx 12 tents. Toilet Block approx. 400m.
Pond A & B (0.30 ha/0.74 ac & 0.31 ha/0.77 ac) - 2 adjoining sites to west of main woodland areas (and not therefore sheltered from prevailing SW wind). Facing south and adjacent to main access track to camping areas. The 2 sites could be combined for a larger group. Each suitable for large Troop camps of approx 12 tents. Pond B backs onto the rhododendron woodland and activity area. Toilet Block approx. 150 – 200m.
Gorse (0.38 ha/0.94 ac) Site faces south and therefore not sheltered from the prevailing wind. Backed and screened from the north by large gorse clump. Suitable for large Troop camps of approx 12 tents. Toilet Block approx. 250m.
Heath A (0.38ha/0.94ac) Elevated site on southern boundary, backing onto adjacent heathland SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest). Gravel track access & adjacent to car park. Suitable for large Troop camps of approx 12 tents. Toilet Block approx. 350m.
Heath B (0.36ha/0.89ac) Elevated site on southern boundary, backing onto adjacent heathland SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest). Gravel track access. Suitable for large Troop camps of approx 12 tents Toilet Block approx. 400m.
Heath C (0.36ha/0.89ac) Elevated site on southern boundary, backing onto adjacent heathland SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest). Gravel track access. Suitable for large Troop camps of approx 12 tents Toilet Block approx. 450m.
LAKESIDE FIELD
Lakeside (approx 1.0 ha/2.47 ac) - Large campsite with mature woodland to southeast and the plantation to northwest. Direct access to the lake. (Other campers have access to lake along track round perimeter of field.) The adjacent mature woodland lies in a Site of Nature Conservation Interest (SNCI) designated by the Dorset Wildlife Trust. Users are asked to respect the wildlife. In particular, there must be no camping, bivouacking, fires or any heavy activity in the Lakeside Woodland which is a beautiful area available for everyone to enjoy. This is a generous site which can take a large District, Troop or family camp of 24 tents. Toilet Block 200m.
RHODODENDRON FIELD
Rhodi A, B C & D (each approx 0.30 ha/0.75 ac) - 4 adjacent open, level sites, facing south and backing onto rhododendron woodland. These are some of the most popular sites. The sites can be combined to produce a level field for a large District camp or rally. Individual sites are generous and can take a large Troop or family camp, up to 20 tents. Rhodi A is nearest the Toilet Block (100m). Rhodi D is about 300m from Toilet Block.
Roe, Fallow, Nightjar, Martins (each approx 0.15 ha/0.40 ac) – 4 adjacent open, level sites, immediately south of Rhodi A, B, C, D. The sites can be combined together or with the Rhodi sites to produce a large level field for a District camp or rally. Individual sites can take a Troop camp of up to 10 tents. Roe is approx 180m from the Toilet Block. Martins is approx 300m from the Toilet Block.
Sika (approx 0.15 ha/0.37 ac) - A very popular, attractive and sheltered site with rhododendron woods on three sides. Backs onto the activity area. Troop camp of up to 10 tents. Toilet Block 150m.
Quarry A & B (each approx. 0.20 ha/0.50 ac) - Open sites on higher ground looking over remainder of Rhododendron Field. No real screening or shelter until new tree planting becomes established. Large Troop camps of up to 15 tents. Toilet Block approx. 250m.
Quarry C & D (each approx. 0.25 ha/0.62 ac) - Open sites on higher ground looking over remainder of Rhododendron Field. No real screening or shelter until new tree planting becomes established. Each site can take large Troop camps of up to 15 tents. Toilet Block approx. 270m.
WOODLAND SITES
Oak (approx 0.15 ha/0.37 ac) - Delightful, secluded, woodland site, well sheltered and mostly screened from adjacent tracks. Suitable for small Troop or Patrol, DoE camp, up to 8 tents. Toilet block 25m.
Warren (approx 0.15 ha/0.37 ac) – Small, popular site under oak trees close to toilet block. Very popular for small Troop, Patrol camps and DoE expedition groups, up to 8 tents. Adjacent to main access track to camping areas. Toilet block 25m.
COPPICE SITE
Coppice (approx 0.30 ha/0.75 ac) a new site, created in the newly planted coppice. Secluded but accessible to the Toilet block 250m away. Easy access to the Activity Field. Suitable for a large Troop camp.
NOTES
Water: most sites have standpipes adjacent or within 150 metres.
Toilets: there is a permanent, modern toilet block with M & F toilets, showers and a disabled suite. At busy times, additional portaloos are located around the site.
Electricity: is not available on camping sites but there are outlets at the ablution block for wheelchair battery & mobile phone charging.
Car parking: is not permitted on camping sites other than in exceptional circumstances, i.e. disabled vehicles. You will be allocated a car park to use on arrival.
